I have used encoders on several projects at work. They are reliable and available.

The last time I used a resolver was in 1996 or maybe 1997. The client wanted to keep their old spare parts, their techs knew how to keep them running. So we put in a new system with resolvers. They worked OK. The client already had them, so I don't know about costs.
