I don't know about Chevy PU's of that vintage, but I had a 1955 Ford back about 1975. The aero was lousy. There was a large area in the middle of the hood where the air flowed forward.

It had an OHV six cylinder engine with three on the tree. Top speed was 75 MPH on a slight downhill grade. Best mileage running empty was 20 MPG at 50 MPH on a warm summer day.

At one time, I thought of putting a GM 2.8L between the frame rails under the front seat and converting the engine compartment into a front trunk. "Fillerup and check the oil, willya?"
