ok.great!! thanks to you both for your input. i'm going to try and find the final drive gear, then. The tranny is no problem for me to open it back up and swap out the final drive gear, just didn't want to get it all apart and find out that I had the wrong parts, or wrong ratios for my application :-)
As far as tire size, those were just generic numbers- didn't want to go outside and look at my tires in the cold and dark (spooky). 14" steelies now, actual size rubber is 185/65/r14 so 70 mph would actually be 2300 rpm, and lower when i get my pretty wheels and tires!
I rebuilt this tranny about 6000 miles ago, when I did my manual conversion. all new bearings and seals($120- ebay) and lsd block (about $120 - ebay). Getting the final drive installed sounds like it might be easier than finding one. LOL
