One thing to remember even at higher speeds is that an auto (even if you have "control") will shift depending on circumstances. For example,y Mustang has no problem cruising along at 29 mph in 6th gear, and I have an even higher ratio than stock. While an automatic won't touch 6th until around 40.
So even with a higher gear ratio, chances are the manual will still let you fair better.
