Heads are relatively easy to deal with, once its off.

Have it resurfaced and put new valves in yourself it it needs any, they use
hardened steel seats in aluminum heads and are replaceable when you put a new valve in, so the seat will be perfect, its not easy to lap a new valve to a seat by hand or even air tools if your not rather skilled at it.

Shops want pretty good money to do your dirty work so if you don't mind getting dirty or bruising a few knuckles , Go for it.

For me I usually have more time then money , so I end up doing my mechanics myself - I'm Slow , no make that real slow but effective..
It took me 3 days to change my lower ball joint & wheel Bearing and starter last time I did work on the car... But it was a cheap fix , $35 eBay Chinese starter and a $20 Ball joint and $20 Bearing and I was done , @ a shop it would of cost about $500 conservatively.
