old oil varnish can clog the tiny passageways of auto transmissions and cause shifting problems. i would add seafoam trans tune following the instructions on the can to clean out old varnish, then replace the trans filter, and refill with fresh ATF. i've had excellent experiences with seafoam's motor oil and gas treatment and heard great things about their trans tune product as well so i would give that a shot.
