Put a VW Polo with a 1.4L 3-cyl turbodiesel and the highest trim level, and a Golf with a 1.6L 4-cyl gasser in a cheaper trim, both at the same price tag, and see which one would be the choice of an American.
Sure it's a PITA to "federalize" some vehicles and engines, but the American car culture also has its role on that matter.
