There was a Discovery channel (I think, it might have been Speed) documentary on the cars with Mr. Shelby, and Mr. Brock talking about the cars, and while discussing the turning vanes, they did mention the getting air to the rear brake scoops, but more emphasis was placed on the aerodynamic benefit. I think the brake cooling airflow bit was true, but I think back in the day, that was all they talked about as a way of not being imitated. So they may have added them to get airflow to the rear brakes, but in retrospect it was a significant aerodynamic advantage.
