If you have ever hit more than a few golf balls at a range, the ones that are worn down fairly smooth fly very erratically. I used to play to a 5.6 handicap on a course that measured 6800 yards from the white tees.

The dimples on a golf ball are for stability. Cars are not spinning at 7000 RPM as they move through the air they way a golf ball spins off of a decent 9 iron.
