Those engines are not so hard to set for stand-alone operation. There are still lots of old Fiat Diesels here in South America, not just in automotive applications but a few set for marine and stationary duties. BTW the 1.7L turbodiesel made in Brazil was still available in a few export versions of the Punto, the Palio and the Strada (the Palio-based coupé-utility) until 2010, I can't recall right now, because they were more suitable to the higher sulphur content at the Diesel fuel than the early JTD common-rail and the Multijet. Back in 2007, Fiat was even working to certify it to operate with pure vegetable oils because Diesel engines are not allowed for light-duty vehicles in Brazil, unless they can either haul one metric ton, carry at least 9 passengers plus driver, or are fitted with a dual-range 4WD driveline.
