Yes you are right.
I actually have two large cardboard panels I've made for an aero shell but for one I didn't think that cardboard an wood strips would hold up to highway speeds for that large of a project. Also I'm on my dads insurance right now so he's worried about a blind spot an when he says no he means no. So I'm starting on something simpler to get the feel for it. I'll work my way up to a tonneau cover.
