I believe that I heard of European Diahatsus while I was in Germany, but pretty much thought the company was out of business. However, reading Wikipedia, it seems like they are doing well, and some of their cars have been sold as Toyotas. It seemed like the main reason that they stopped selling in the United States is because Toyota obtained a controlling interest and pulled them.
Daihatsu had some models with the insta rust paint system as well (same system honda liked in the 1970s), no idea on charades, given most were sold down south it may not have mattered. Our daihatsu move is rusting up nicely though in the wonderful salt belt.

Daihatsu has had some interesting hybrid alternatives and a lot of micro cars, which of coarse were never really sold here to speak of.
