Having driven a medium duty roll-back for a few years, I may be able to shed some light of the trucker's POV. I carried wrecks, parts will fall off. Sometimes they are little bolts, sometimes it may be something larger, like a windshield. If someone is close, it seems like they are looking for new paint/windshield/money, and I don't want the hassle.
With the entire freeway, having someone riding me, also meant they might not be paying attention. I was trying to get mileage out of the old girl, and I didn't need someone interfering.
I would guarantee a class A wouldn't feel getting hit from behind with minimal speed differential. I lost a wheel/tire/hub off of a early 00s Civic that I was stinging. 70 MPH with its control arms tearing up the freeway. The first I noticed was when a 5-series flashed me.
