I swapped the seat that had similar damage and took the one that was not damaged.

I have never tried a vinyl repair like you are describing. My thoughts would be based on whether the upholstery is easily removeable. If so then repair it on the inside with some fabric and flesxible adhesive to handle any stretching. You want to close the gap so the split is just two pieces right against each other. Now your external repair is not structural, just cosmetic. Fill it with adhesive silicone sealer and clean away any excess before it dries.
