Way "back in the day" I had an 03' in 05'. I think I averaged around 43 mpg in the city and about the same on the highway. If I was really trying, I could manage 50 mpg but that created a lot of angry people behind me.
I liked it a lot actually until the traction battery gave way and it was replaced under warranty. Roughly 40k miles. Sold it afterwards so I didn't get a chance to test it further for reliability.
On the other hand, my friend here in Asia has a 97' Prius and it's still going strong. I think it has around 390,000 on the odometer, but there's no word on what he's replaced or what was done in the past. He paid $800 for it last year and it hasn't given him issues thought
