One thing that has become painfully obvious is the devastating effect traffic has to my overall fuel economy. Even if you're doing your very best to time lights, avoid congested routes, coasting, etc., an expected traffic accident or road construction can have you sitting in the one place any hypermiler dreads .... grid lock.
Something that I've found that helps, aside from carefully picking my routes, is adjusting my travel times to avoid peak traffic hours. By leaving 10 minutes earlier, I can reduce travel time by as much as 20-25 minutes and average 5-6 MPG better for that trip. It just means that the snooze button has become an enemy.
