The streamliner was not just a beautiful design, rather it was a highly functional reflection of the knowledge that Mercedes-Benz had gained in their research into aerodynamic flow. A standard version of the 540 K had a Cd of 0.57 resulting in a top speed of 140-145km/h - the Streamliner however slashed that figure to just 0.36 and as a result lifted the top speed to around 165-170km/h - a real feat for the era. The autobahns, which were new at the time, offered the ideal conditions for testing. The rather special 540 K was often employed on long-distance runs, for example to Berlin or Hamburg and back, sometimes at night, as Gerd Hammes, the son of Dunlopís garage foreman, remembers.
