I've only read about both, but they seem to be similar crowd-sourced efforts.
Local Motors gets a lot of press with their 3D printed car body, and containerized microfactories—one of which landed on the White House lawn. Similar to the WIKISPEED body (or bodies?) the (Italian) designer only appeared physically at the trade show debut.
