My company is starting to wise up a little. My supervisor told me recently to just rent a car if I know I have a 300 mile or more day coming up. It is considerably cheaper than paying me .56/mi. I have known other techs to rent a car on their own dime, collected the .56/mi and come out well ahead.

The only trouble with this is making sure you don't leave any tools/parts in the rental. It also adds an hour or two to your day.

Knowing the kind of miles we rack up, they really ought to look at buying us company cars. Until then, I will gladly rack up the miles and bank the expense money.
