Its not just fuel enrichment you need to look out for. You can stay in closed loop mode in most modern cars at WOT for quite a while. However, the ignition timing starts to retard at high engine loads. This reduces efficiency first. Then, when the engine can't mitigate pinging with ignition timing, it dumps extra fuel to cool things down, aka open loop mode.
