I can't quite see this. Though I'm not familiar with the Prius, it would seem that the absolute optimum would be a Volt-like constant engine load (running at best BSFC), and using the electric motor to add power for acceleration. Especially since that power is (optimally) saved from what would otherwise be wasted as heat in braking.
