Thanks. The commute is a little bit harder to obtain very good mileage (110+ mpg when hot outside). But it is a bigger challenge so I like it

Rmay pretty much summed it up, when it is near 0°C or colder, the NiMH batteries stops accumulating the charge really quickly and starts releasing it in heat.
