If it was grinding with the original starter and still grinding with the new starter the starter isn't the problem. Try turning the engine over by hand or by bumping it over if it is a manual trans. This will allow the starter to engage in another spot on the ring gear if the teeth are worn where it stopped. Or, you can remove the starter and do a visual inspection of the ring gear with a flashlight.
