Edison especially- what are they doing with that huge pile of prize money? Developing a car or just living large?

Where does the money come from for those X-Prizes anyway? Many corporate sponsors or does Progressive have that much money laying around because that's how badly they screw their customers?
I am pretty certain that Edison2 spent more than $5M just getting to the X-Prize. They had built 8 or 10 cars by the end, and then did a lot of work after the X-Prize, too.

Aptera had raised about $35M and had less to show for it.

Illuminati Motor Works is still out there, and they have rebuilt the entire body, and made other improvements. They dropped their consumption from ~156Wh/mile to ~130Wh/mile.

I've been hoping to see Dave Cloud's Dolphin with a lithium pack in it - that would be an an amazing thing.
