I want to share a nice surprise that I had on my way to Prague and back. Or to be more precise at the pump after the trip.
As you may know I'm driving VW Polo right now and recently started to modd it a bit. Kill switch, MPGuino, some aero mods.
Back to the route. First I went to the gas station to top up the tank. I needed to be very precise because that was my first attempt to calibrate MPGuino. I usually stop to pour fuel at the second click. Now I wanted to see the fuel level just to be sure. Amazing how much fuel can be poured before the first and the last click
Average consumption for this fill up was shocking (in a bad way) 7.41 l/100km (31.74 mpg US). Mostly because of a very short distance driven - 123km. So I've started the trip. In Prague after driving for 554km fuel gauge showed 3/4 but since it's way not linear I knew that's too good to be true. I calibrated distance count though. And by a humble estimation I've set fuel consumption for 4.5 l/100km (52.27 mpg US). After my work there was finished I got into Polo and started my trip back home.
I'm not eocing much... I'm killing engine on some long slopes down, traffic lights, railroad crossing etc. Anyway my FE was going up... On my arrival MPGuino was showing 4.23l/100km and 1129.3km. That was beforre the calibration. So I've filled up the tank, again to the very last click, that I could actually see the fuel. It took 43.24l to top it up. I've checked twice... Fuel consumption was a very nice surprise. I thought that it was around 4.0 but didn't thought it'll be as slow as 3.83 l/100km. Of course I want to go even lower, but that was my first ride with the car modified.
Anyway I'm happy with the result.
