I always use the cruise control on my wife's Explorer to speed up or slow down, rather than using the gas pedal. I'd say I have it on 90% of the time. By keeping the cruise on as much as possible and clicking it one or two miles an hour at a time to speed up or down, it holds the rpms (and mpg meter) way more steady than I possibly can with my foot on the gas pedal.
