The original premise was to provide an aft-body contour of high confidence, for the elongation which Hucho has promoted, and others have used for separation-free flow; to either reduce or eliminate the wake.
So yes,it is primarily intended for mass-produced automobiles manufactured after around 1984.
Derivatives of this 'pumpkin seed' actually began the modern solar racer era, with the introduction of the GM/AeroVironment Sunraycer, which won the 1987 World Solar Challenge

Which borrows from Koenig-Fachsenfeld/Kamm of the mid-1930s

Which borrowed from Walter Lay of 1933

Who borrowed from Wolfgang Klemperer of 1922

Who,in turn, borrowed from Paul Jaray the same year

The 2013 Cambridge University Eco Racer (CUER) is a recent solar racer which closely fits the template, with Cd 0.10

Many of the university solar teams opt for laminar wing profiles as a basis for their race cars. Each layout has specific advantages.
The racers like CUER appear to be the 'fastest' of all solar cars, but rely on a stored PV array, and battery-only power while racing. If they encounter any problems while out on the course,it can spell disaster to their point standing.
