Your post would seem to contradict with itself?
There's plenty of data, it all says the same story. The laws of physics cannot be wished away and above a certain point,
speed kills mpg, period, full stop, end of story.
You don't have to look very hard to see some test results:

You can reduce idling too certainly, plenty of other things you can do to save gas as well.
