It sounds like you passed a test. You could do some A-B-A testing.

Make two wire U-shapes of length lxwxl, slide one in from each end, and treat the w edge as above (taped, or folded and taped).

And I'd replace the 'srews' with pan-head pop rivets with backing washers.
