I think they position the groove in a non-load bearing arc.
I wonder how they compare to ordinary non-caged bicycle wheel bearings? It looks like a mod that would be relatively easy to retrofit to a bicycle hub... except I think it would have to be done on the cone and then the cone would need to be indexed relative to the ground.
