Mazda CX-5 breaks 43 MPG tank! CX-9 breaks 25!

Finally, I matched the all-time-best I had with the old '06 Jetta TDI with "Silver", my newer trusty steed! I've been very predictably maintaining 38.6-39.2 MPG with the less efficient higher traffic commutes when I deliver the kids to school. Now that they are on summer break I reverted back to leaving earlier and have much more room to engine on coast and DFCO. I also removed the bottom portion of the grill blocks to reduce cooling fan usage. I've also been able to see trends with the scangauge that's helping me conserve more fuel. Normally, I try to only use the AC when I'm coasting and DFCO but I've been using it at stop lights too. I've been loosing .1 mpg every 2-3 seconds with AC so I've tried to endure the heat and not use it until I get to a better MPG situation to cool down.
On our family trip to the outer banks running max sidewall in the CX-9 I hand calculated over 25 MPG over the whole trip on E10. That was with maximizing my speed and using the AC very liberally. I didn't think that was too bad using a 3.7 liter with a six speed auto
