Having done about 5 trans swaps, it isn't easy, and is the most difficult job on a prius, but worth saving $2,000? Obviously I think so because I've done it more than once.
I find it unlikely that BOTH were bad. If the trans went out and it sat, it would drain the battery, which might just need recharged and not replaced. When the 12v battery is dying you can get false errors.
