Warm air intake

The warm air intake on the white VX is our 3 attempt and became somewhat involved. We were trying to get the engine to warm up faster in the winter when temps are below 32 degrees. The VX ECM will not allow lean burn until the water temp is about 160 degrees.

I am calling this attempt at WAI version 3.0

Here is how we get the fastest warm up of the intake temp to over 100 degrees within 2 miles of start up in 32 degree weather.

The WAI tube is welded directly to the catalytic converter.

Then an insulated box was built around the catalytic converter to concentrate the heat coming off it.

Here is the bottom of the enclosure.

Although this picture of the WAI outside the car is from the red VX, both are very similar.

Here is a close up of the warm and cold air mixing valve made from a 3 inch cast iron exhaust cut out valve. Notice the adjusting cable attached. It is attached to the air filter box.

Here is another view of the mixing valve

Here is a picture of the WAI installed in the white VX

Actually this WAI intake works so well at warming up the intake air that we have to bring in "COLD" air in the summer to maintain my ideal intake temp of 130 to 140 degrees at all times. Here is the 3 inch hose opening in the bottom of the belly pan, which is only connected in the summer. In the winter the fresh air is drawn in inside the engine bay.

Here is the temp gauge I use to monitor the air temp of the incoming air. The sensor is located about 2 inches from the intake, inside the snorkel from the air filter. Also in this picture you can see the pull for the cable going to the mixing valve.
