Cold air intakes usually are used to increase power or for when the engine has an overheating problem.
For economy's sake, the warmer engine compartment air can be advantageous for the intake system, and partial grill blocking is sometimes done to increase aerodynamics and utilize the advantages of the warm inside air.
So, whether cold air intakes are beneficial depends on what you're trying to achieve.
