Those independent wheel ones are crazy. Mine would be solid axles, though likely custom built with the motors where the diff is, and shafts to the wheels somewhat like normal. I've considered running some gearing, likely in the form of transfer case guts, basically like a Klune-V if you've ever seen those. Thats basically what was inside my doubler in the S10. That would be relatively simple, cheap, and plenty strong. For weight, i think 1500-2000 lbs is probably feasible without considering how much the batteries would weigh. I dont have a good idea yet of how much weight it would be if i used lead acid based. This thing would probably be about the size of a side by side, but with larger tires.
