Converting earbuds to hands-free

My last hands-free device broke, so I went back to previous stores where I bought them, and could not find any. Resigned to further wasting my time, I asked an employee.
"Excuse me, do you have any normal corded hands-free devices?"
"You mean Bluetooth?"
[Deepbreath] "No, normal ones, with a cord."
"So, Bluetooth."
"No, not Bluetooth, wired ones."
"Why don't you use Bluetooth?"
Shut up and take my money?

I only use them while I am driving and fixing my car charger is on the to-do list, waiting for my first [adequate] paycheck. I already have insufficient battery life, so turning on Bluetooth, then having a second device to keep charged, is a hassle. I just want it in case I need to talk to someone while I am driving. I tried using just one earbud, but it was even more annoying than I thought it would be.

Can I just cut off one earbud cord at the Y and shrink-wrap it?

Thank you very much!
