It is also built in Thailand not the US. Mitsubishi is big company with potential profits coming from many fronts. It wouldn't surprise me if they actually lose money on every base manual transmission Mirage they sell. Their only reason to have a few like the Versa and the Spark, so people will come in thinking maybe they will walk out with a $13,000 new car and end up spending a lot more. I do think they could sell the Elio for a similar price with a very slim profit if they pay the workers Walmart or less wages with limited benefits.
A Can-am Spider starts at $15,000 and goes to $22,500, how on earth is the Elio going to have more content and be less then 1/2 the price?

Maybe this would help?
New Cars under $10,000 (Chevrolet Spark, Nissan Versa and Mitsubishi Mirage)
Search shows 169 new cars for sale under $10k. Mirage, Versa and Sparks. All those cars have alot more parts and metal go in, and more costly to make.
Spider is a bad example, b/c it uses motorcycle parts (suspension, brakes, everything), Rotax engine and it isn't really mass-produced.
I'll bet for $6,800 you will be getting a real stripper with 5MT.
