I was able to get 40+ mpg with my 2009 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix clone) with 1.8L 4-speed automatic...
without shutting engine off...just nudging the shift-lever into Neutral. I know this is "safe" on the 2009 models, but I'm NOT sure about the 2004 vehicles (I have both).
