I'm interested in the engine, which has that claimed 40% thermal efficiency.

They said the spark energy went up from 35mJ to 100mJ to allow the highly EGR diluted mix to burn. Very interesting. That seems like something you might be able to replicate on any old engine, increase compression ratio, let it run lean, and use a more powerful spark to stop misfiring. I'm leaving my FRS stock but will definitely experiment with the spark on my next car.
