It may not look OEM but the dash top is the best place, followed by the top of the steering column. If you guys have 'Blu-Tack' that's used for sticking posters etc up, that will let you mount it to a curved surface and still be easily removable.
I've often thought covering the SG with a second dash top pod from a wreck would be the way to go. You could possibly also use something like a motorbike helmet, suitably cut down
