Old School Diesel thermal efficiency improvement?

Hello all,

My 1998 Peugeot 306 has a 1.9 litre XUD turbo diesel.

It has the intercooler on top of the engine, which is not ideal from a cooling point of view- it also means a fair whack of heat escapes via the bonnet.

Do I move the intercooler to the front and add insulation onto the bonnet?

Also the car has no undertray so I was considering putting foam insulation on the sump and block to improve warmup..

My bonnet after approx 10 mins and 1.5 mile running- seems to have melted a fair bit of snow!
