I understand, it's hard to get rid of the comfort of an automatic transmission after you get used to it. But you can still do some tricks with the engine. And maybe forced induction and a taller rear-end (a second aftermarket overdrive unit doesn't convince me at all, as it would add some friction losses to the transmission setup) might be useful. With a supercharger, you could also eventually increase the intake valve timing to get lower pumping losses, while the supercharger would be compensating the discompression by pushing back the charge air.
