I won't talk to cops when they pull me over or stop me for nothing. You are well within your right to say, "I wish to remain silent." "I'll need a lawyer present before I answer your questions." You should also ask "Am I under arrest?" "Am I free to go?" "Why am I being detailed?" over and over and over. But do not answer any of his questions other than your name, age, and address.
Since you were not driving when he questioned you, he had no right to require you to show your ID or paperwork for the vehicle.

As far as the sides go,I really don't think it will make much of a difference. It will certainly be easier to build if you keep them straight or tapered in a bit, and you'll have more usable under cover space. I tapered mine in too much but my top shape was way too fast, so I suppose they sort of equaled each other out.
Here's something I whipped up showing a Dodge cab, the lines represent about every 24 inches or so going back, different colors so they don't all blur together. Something I ended up doing because I used thin ply wood, is I ended up making the top into 3 flat sections, and the sides were flat. Only the corners were radiused. This keeps you from trying to put a compound curve into plywood. (It hates that)
The drawing here does not represent that, but it would only take like 30 minutes to change it to be that way.
Take a look see.
