These overdrive units can work in all gears. All the overdrive is in a nutshell is another gear added to the back of the gearbox which will run in any gear as long as it is engaged. Most people think that they can only run in 3rd and 4th because the way Triumph designed the electrics. Triumph designed it in this way to prevent the operator from accidently shifting into reverse while the overdrive is activated which results in very bad things

How it works is Triumph used a small spring interrupter loaded switch in the electrical circuit between the overdrive lever/switch inside the car and the solenoid on the overdrive unit itself that moves the clutch in the overdrive which engages the overdrive. The lever attached to the shifter linkage holds the interrupter switch or small spring closed so current can flow when the transmission lever is moved to the 3rd or 4th gear position.

Now if you wanted to be able to engage the Overdrive in all gears you simply remove the small spring interrupter switch or use a bypass switch and voila now you have 8 gears
