It was common to put the LS 5th gear into the transmissions that came with the B16's (y21), so as to have a reasonable highway gear (though still rather short) while gears 1-4 would still keep the engine above VTEC engagement (5600RPM) when upshifting at redline. The Y21 transmission has a slightly shorter final drive than the LS transmission, but not enough shorter as to make a large difference.
