After investigation, I cut my SG into the column.

The gauge has some unused space at the bottom, so I lost nothing by burying it into the column. Now I see all the stock gauges and features, and it is right where it belongs.
The VW's all run fast on the speedometer, so I have an actual calibrated MPH as one of my options.
