At 100,000 miles, 40 vs 65 mpg at 3$ a gallon is only going to save you 1500$. So even driving 25k miles a year, you really aren't coming out on top. Even if the battery lasts 6.5-7 years, that's still 15-20k miles a year.

Why replace the battery? When I had a bad battery, I just disconnected the battery, and was set for a week. Couldn't hit 75+ MPG as well, though, stuck in the 60s driving it like a racecar :/
