If you're looking for a cleaner burn (to pass emisisons, etc) you can run denatured alkyhol mixed in your tank, but as with most anything else you can buy at the local home improvement store it lacks the energy to be a good fuel source.

That said, it WILL clean your fuel system for you, including knocking stuff loose from your fuel filter and into your injectors, lol, so replace the filter first before trying.

Also you need to burn through as quickly as possible since any of the alkyhols can accumulate moisture in the fuel system, and water in gas (or diesel) is bad juju.

In conclusion, good cheap way to potentially make your engine run better and better economy as a result of cleaning things, can also help pass emissions as alkyhol burns clean, but as with all things no free lunch as there are ways it can make the situation worse.
