I'd ask $5-8000 if it were me. Less than the two-toned Superbeetle convertible next to it.
VWs respond well to tuning, although it is usually done for (4x) power. Crank-fired (distributorless) computer ignition systems and fuel injection are on the shelf. Subaru swaps are popular. I haven't seen direct injection gas engines yet, but it won't surprise me.
EV conversion would be best, recouping the drivetrain price would depend on mileage, etc.
All it really is, is a shape and not a particularly good one. There are steel Beetle bodies with less frontal area.
You hit on the big problem—ingress/egress; or maybe it's just more important to me as the years go on. The Beetle body was optimized to accommodate the majority of humanity.
