I just tried this in 5th gear at 30 MPH and I only felt a "bumplet". So, I would be comfortable at that speed.

I think that when you are "bitten" by the jerky engagement in the lower gears, you become adverse to doing it again. The logical thing would be to "make a map" of where the straight engagements are smooth at speed X + gear Y.
